Lent is a season for the repentance of sin. When we think of sinfulness we ordinarily run through the Ten Commandments and see which ones we violated. However, in the Bible, sin is much broader than commandment keeping. For example, if we were doing an examination of conscience using Isaiah 58 as a guide it might go something like this: Have I tolerated oppression, false accusations and malicious speech? Have I shared my bread with the hungry? Have I worked to satisfy those who were afflicted? Have I sought my own interests or those of God? Have I spoken with malice? Next time you go to confession look at the bigger picture of how your inactions are preventing this from becoming the world that God intends.
