St. John’s Gospel is a profound telling of the story of Jesus. One thing to notice are the seeming throw away lines which actually contain a deeper meaning. For example in the telling of the story of the Last Supper after Judas leaves the meal the Fourth Gospel says, “And it was night.” The evangelist is not talking about the time of day but the state of Judas’ soul. This contrasts with the prophetic word about Jesus in Isaiah. “I will make you a light to the nations.” One of the spiritual masters, St. Ignatius, said that the devil lives where there are secrets and lies. Bringing things out of the dark and into the light gives the grace of God an opportunity to shine.
