Each of the gospel writers tells the story of the passion, the suffering and death of Jesus. On Good Friday every year we proclaim the passion according to St. John. Each evangelist describes Pilate interviewing Jesus. The Fourth Gospel has a particular emphasis in that exchange. Pilate is trying to find out if Jesus is a threat to Rome by proclaiming himself as king. Jesus rejected that category. He responded to Pilate: “For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” Pilates question challenges us today. The truth is that love is stronger than death, that God never fails.
