The conversion of St. Paul was a major event in the early Church — so major that St. Luke records an account of the event three different times in the Acts of the Apostles. The key moment comes when the heavenly voice announced to the young Pharisee, Saul, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.” The radical identification of Jesus with his followers produced the moment of conversion for Saul. We today are asked to make the same identification — to see Jesus in all the people we encounter in life. That is not so difficult when someone is kind, appreciative and grateful. The real work comes in recognizing the presence of Jesus in someone who is needy, demanding and aggressive. I must pray about that.
