St.Paul’s initial missionary activity was centered on what today is the country of Turkey. In most of that area Christianity has almost completely disappeared. How could a Church founded by an apostle prove so vulnerable to the advance of Islam several centuries later? At least part of the answer lies in the feuds, disputes, factionalism, disagreements, conflict that characterized the Christians in the fourth through the seventh centuries. Without a basic unity about right belief and practice, Christianity over time faded away in Turkey. That historical memory struck me when I heard that a recent panel at Fordham University asked, “Is the Pope Catholic?” It seems some who disagree with Pope Francis’ approach are questioning his orthodoxy. We must learn how to have different opinions while at the same time trusting in our fundamental unity.
