The problems in the contemporary Church are nothing new. For example, dealing with diversity has been a perennial issue going back to the beginning of Christianity. Jesus and his immediate circle spoke Aramaic (a Semitic language related to Hebrew) but soon they attracted “Hellenists,” Greek speaking Jews. The Acts of the Apostles reports tension between the two groups. The Apostles designated certain men to provide leadership to the Greek-speakers. We refer to them as the first deacons. Lessons for our time: we need to be as creative as the Apostles were in finding ways to minister to the diversity that exists in the Church today. And, we should be prepared to find the Church being led in new directions as a result.
