Someone once observed that humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less. If that is true, and it sounds right to me, then when Jesus says “Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven” he is asking us to get over our obsession with self, with what I can accomplish. Remember a few years ago a book, Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten?” One of the lessons was “hold hands when crossing the street.” Yes, this can be a scary world and there are genuine dangers out there. But if we “hold hands,” if we support each other, we are exhibiting genuine humility and on our way to the kingdom of heaven.
