Jeremiah’s call for “a new covenant” is particularly timely today. The number of people who are estranged from the Church are growing. The way to this new covenant comes in answering the question that Jesus posed to his disciples: “Who do you say that I am?” Coming to know Jesus will create the covenant written on the heart that produces genuine conversion. However, really knowing Jesus requires “thinking as God does.” And, as the life of Jesus reminds us, the means forgiving those who have harmed us, loving our enemies, caring for the “least of the brothers and sisters.” Once we know Jesus well we join with him in picking up the cross of following the will of God no matter where it leads.
