Isaiah and Jesus hold out for us a vision of “the peaceable kingdom.” With the wisdom of the world we can get cynical that things are the way they are, that we are stuck in the reality of greed, selfishness, and ignorance condemning us to ongoing problems. Jesus sees new possibilities: “although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike.” Look at the example of Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teenager who keeps agitating world leaders to deal with climate change. Only the “childlike” would imagine that her voice would be able to prevail against all of the economic, political, and nationalistic inertia resisting change. But Jesus said, trust in such childlike hope for the future.
