The readings during the Advent season are not part of a “continuous reading” as in ordinary time but particularly chosen for each day. For example, today Isaiah prophesies that “on this mountain” the Lord will provide for all peoples. In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus goes “up on the mountain” and multiplies the loaves and fishes to feed a multitude. The “this-ness” found in both readings strikes the reader. Don’t go looking at some other place to be fed, to be satisfied, to be fulfilled. This place, the place where you are now is exactly the right place to receive God’s blessing. During this day and in this place we must look around and see in our “this-ness” that God showers blessings upon us.
