“Why does this generation seek a sign?” This plaintive question of Jesus is a reminder of the human quest for something extraordinary. Remember that the crowds had recently been present when Jesus multiplied the loaves and the fishes. They had seen him work cures and drive out demons. But the wanted “a sign.” Jesus turns down their request because he understood that the desire for a sign is never satisfied. He implies if you can’t find God in what has already happened you will never feel that what you have is sufficient. In our lives we must learn to find the “signs” of God’s presence not the in the unusual or the odd but in the ordinary: a child being born, a flower blooming.
