“Christ is mediator of a new covenant.” Covenant is used in the Bible to refer to the reciprocal relationship that God has with us. The people of Israel are the “chosen people” because God entered into a particular relationship with them. The people promised fidelity to God and God promised to be there for them. The letter to the Hebrews picks up the theme of covenant but describes it as something “new.” In Jesus we find that God is not only for us but God is also with us — with us in all of joys and the sorrows that are the human condition. The gap between heaven and earth has been bridged. In Jesus we have direct access to God’s graces and blessings.
