Almost the whole of the Book of Genesis deals with the getting the Chosen People to the Promised Land. Abram is led from Ur of the Chaldees to Canaan. He and Lot split up the land. Isaac is not to go back to the ancestral land no matter what. Jacob flees the Promised Land in fear but comes back with God’s blessing and a new name. At the end of Genesis, however, Jacob goes down to Egypt with the entire clan and all his possessions. The Patriarch abandons the Promised Land. The Bible says 430 years later Moses led the Chosen People back to Canaan. In human terms 430 years can seem like forever. The promise will be kept but in God’s time not in ours.
