This summer the readings are taken from the prophets. This week we turn to Isaiah. He was so important in helping the early Christians appreciate who Jesus was that he became The Prophet, capital letters. His ministry was in the southern kingdom of Judah but his message was consonant with the northern prophets Amos and Hosea. He warned the people not to rely on religious practices as the measure of their relationship with God. If they weren’t living justly, if they weren’t caring for those who were in need their “offerings and sacrifices” would be of no avail. Jesus was part of that same prophetic tradition. For that reason he placed love of God and love of neighbor as two sides of the same coin.
