My old Bible teacher called it a “Johannine thunderbolt in a Matthean sky.” In Matthew 11 we read: “No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son.” This is the kind of language we usually find in the fourth gospel and here it is in the first. Instead of the down to earth parables we associate with St. Matthew we find this lofty theological language more commonly found in St. John. That these two different traditions remember Jesus speaking in this way testifies that he did, in fact, use language during his life describing the intimate relationship he had with the one he called his Heavenly Father. In our prayer we strive to deepen our intimacy with God.
