A naive understanding of the ways of God suggests that the good are rewarded and the evil punished. The Prophet Isaiah hints at this when he says, “The way of the just is smooth; the path of the just you make level.” The sayings of Jesus can also promote this idea: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
… and you will find rest for yourselves.” Of course life proves otherwise. Sometimes the good suffer and the wicked prosper. We can see the Prophet widening his vision about how the “way of the just is smooth” by including eternity. “Salvation we have not achieved for the earth … but your dead shall live, awake and sing.” The yoke of Jesus includes trusting God’s plan.
