The escaping Hebrew slaves trapped between the Red Sea and the advancing Egyptian army was vividly portrayed by Cecil B. DeMille in The Ten Commandments. Who can forget Edward G. Robinson giving Charleton Heston a hard time! What is striking about the scene in the Bible is the astonishment of God at the lack of faith among the Chosen People. After all that they had seen God do for them in sending ten plagues which forced pharaoh to free them from slavery, what made them doubt that God would continue to care for them? We, unfortunately, share a similar tendency to notice the immediate trouble forgetting the mercies of God which led to this point. The ancestors were wise in saying “count your blessings.”
