A few years ago there was a play, Doubt (subsequently made into a movie) set in a Catholic church and school in the early 1960’s. The mother superior of the school has relied on the certainties of the faith she inherited. She resists the changes brought about by Vatican II and as a result gets into conflict the the parish priest who is full of enthusiasm for the new. The play shows that when we have certainty we get into conflict with others. When we have doubt we only fight with ourselves. On the feast of St. Thomas we should look on our doubts in a positive light for it is our doubts that pave the way, not to knowledge, but to genuine faith.
