The daily Bible readings are distributed over a two year cycle called the lectionary. You get a good taste of scripture by attending to the reading of the day. However, sometimes you miss some of the more interesting tidbits since the lectionary just hits the highlights. Take, for example, the story of Abraham buying a burial plot for his wife, Sarah. The assigned reading takes out the bargaining that Abraham engaged in to ensure there would never be any doubt that he as a immigrant had a right to that plot. Or the story of Rebekah becoming Isaac’s wife. The lectionary doesn’t include the parts of the story where Rebekah’s strong and forceful personality comes through. The Bible is populated by people just like us.
