Elijah appears on the scene in the Bible as a mighty prophet. He defied King Ahab and Queen Jezebel for not preserving pure worship of the God of Israel. Jezebel was from Sidon and a Baal worshiper who introduced the practices of her native country into Israel. Elijah feared for his life because of his opposition to the king and went into hiding. Eventually he ended up, in all places, in Zarephath, a city of Sidon! Elijah, the prophet of God, went into pagan territory and lived with a pagan widow and her son. In the providence of God, Elijah had to learn that the “enemy” was human too, worthy of kind and compassionate treatment. This lesson is one we should take to heart today.
