“Turn the other cheek.” “Give to those who ask.” “Love your enemies.” “Be perfect.” Every now and then I feel like saying to Jesus, Give me a break. I’m a good person. I’m okay. I’m decent. Why are you such a nudge? Perhaps the point of the Sermon on the Mount is Jesus telling us: don’t be content with being decent, become a saint. Our prayer today is to do a fearless moral inventory and name those resentments, those grudges, those uncharities, those prejudices that we hold onto. The Lord wants us to take one more step on the road to sanctity by getting rid of those residual faults that cling to us like grease burnt into the frying pan.
