Jesus spoke of not abolishing the law but of fulfilling it. We see what he means in the Sermon on the Mount when he contrasts the kind of minimalist thinking that can characterize a “law-abiding” citizen with the maximal thinking that is the hall mark of the gospel life. We have obeyed the law, the fifth commandment, when we haven’t killed anyone one. That is certainly good but it is not sufficient for Jesus. He wants us to think in terms of creating an atmosphere where we actively promote the value, the worth, the dignity of every individual. The law prompts us to ask “what can I get away with.” The gospel requires that we question “what more can I do” for charity’s sake.
