“When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well.” This saying of Jesus has challenged Christians throughout the ages. Some have taken it as a clarion call to pacifism. Dr. Martin Luther King saw it as a strategy of love. He rejected those who characterized non-violence as “passive resistance.” There was nothing passive about the civil rights movement. Rather, he kept pushing the racist establishment to change their behavior. He argued that this was an act of love. You can’t let people to continue to operate in ignorance and bigotry if you love them. This saying of Jesus should impel us to look on our own relationships. We must act expecting the best in others to come out.
