Jesus said, “Offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well.” One of the student Brothers said you could file this theologically under, “Are you kidding me?” We think, of course you offer resistance to evil. As the cycle of violence in Chicago demonstrates, if you don’t nip the shootings in the bud, they will spread and cause even more misery. So what is Jesus asking of us, his followers? As we see from the context, Our Lord is asking us to look beyond the terms of strict justice and instead think in terms of charity. While justice is necessary in society, charity is what makes us followers of Jesus.
