A story from the desert Fathers: a thief broke into the hut of the monk and asked for his treasures. “I have nothing except this stone.” The stone was in fact a diamond, large and beautiful. The thief took the diamond and the next day he went back to the monk. “But I have nothing,” he told the thief who answered, “Give me the wealth that makes giving away a diamond so easy.” It is our actions, more than our words that touch peoples hearts. Jesus challenged his listeners to believe in him because “the works that I perform testify on my behalf.” When people see in us works of love, kindness, compassion, forgiveness they will be attracted to the life of faith we profess.
