“I say to you, love your enemies.” This word of Jesus has challenged Christians throughout the ages. Won’t we become Casper Milquetoast if we love our enemies? The example of Jesus shows us otherwise. He was not afraid to confront his enemies: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.” What Jesus knew is that loving your enemies does not mean letting them have their way but rather requires confronting them to put them on the right way. Everyone who has ever dealt with someone who was addicted knows this kind of love; tough love we call it. If you love the addict enough you will not give in to his/her demands but instead do what is necessary to put them on the right path.
