St. John’s Gospel frequently has a line that means more than it seems. For example, after a scene where the Pharisees, including Nicodemus, and the temple guards are having a disagreement about Jesus he wrote: “Then each went to his own house.” St. John is not simply reporting on their geographical site but in the spiritual situation. Each one was stuck in their own opinion, their own way of thinking, and never mind the facts. Of course, this resonates all too well with our current reality. As a nation we have retreated into our particular tribes and find it impossible to put ourselves into the shoes of another. Nicodemus urged his hearers, and us, to listen to and find out what the other is about.
