From the very beginning there have been divisions and controversies in the Church. The most critical happened to the first generation of believers because of the inclusion of non-Jews (Gentiles) into the fellowship. Were they going to be required to follow the Jewish law or not? Very sincere, very devout people were on both side of the controversy. Those first Christians determined that the only way to resolve the issue was to gather together in prayer, honest dialogue and reflection in order to understand God’s will in this situation. That serves as a good model for us. People will have very honest disagreements about what God is asking of us in certain particular circumstances. We should follow seek God’s will together in prayerful discernment.
