We’ve all heard the expressions: “How do you make God laugh? Tell God your plans.” Or as the Imitation of Christ put it: “Man proposes and God disposes.” One of the Biblical antecedents to these sentiments is found in the epistle of St. James. We read there: “You should say, ‘If the Lord wills it, we shall live to do this or that.'” In English we have gotten out of the custom of saying, “God willing” but many other languages preserve it. In Spanish, for example, “ojala” which can be translated as “hopefully” is an echo of the Arabic “inshallah,” God willing. Let us prayerfully remember that we were able to get out of bed in this morning and breathe because of God’s beneficent will.
