Once when I was leading a retreat, we were sharing about times in our lives when we felt the presence of God. One man shared about a time when his dog got hit by a car but after lots of medical intervention the dog recovered fully. “The healing of my dog assured me that God was with me,” he said. I couldn’t help but thinking: what if the dog died? Would that mean that God wasn’t with him? That suggests the theme that lies behind the Book of Job in the Bible. We feel God’s blessing when things are going well. When things are going poorly how do we understand the action and presence of God? Can we find God even when the dog dies?
