“Your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do.” This accusation hurled at Jesus has echoed through the ages. Being a priest in Elizabethan England was unlawful — and hundreds were martyred. Sitting at a lunch counter in the Southern US was unlawful. Hundreds were jailed for doing so. When Dr. King was asked about this he spoke the priority of justice. Yes, the laws of a nation are important but they must answer to a higher law, the law of God. Which gets us to this moment in our country. The current situation of immigrants is being framed as a question of obeying the law. But laws change, justice does not. The right political step is unclear but the need for charity is very clear.
