In the Book of Numbers we meet Balaam, called a prophet even though he is not a Jew. In giving his oracle he proclaims it to be “the utterance of the man whose eye is true; the utterance of one who hears what God says and knows what the Most High knows.” Quite a claim! Wouldn’t it be great to be able to call on someone who “knows what the Most High knows.” Truth to tell we are, rightly, a little uneasy about someone who claims to know the mind of God. We have see too frequently that such people tend to be fanatical and capable of great harm. Better someone with humility, who understands our limited understanding of God and “tests every spirit.”
