Then the LORD said to Isaiah: Go out to meet Ahaz, [king of Judah], … and say to him: “Take care you remain tranquil and do not fear.” In the United States the idea of the separation of Church and State is so ingrained we can forget that for most of human history, in almost every culture, Church and State were united. Religion was intended to support the rule of the king and vice versa. Several Supreme Court decisions recently concerning abortion and contraception are testing the meaning of separation of church and state. Things seem to work best when the Church articulates clearly the values and ethics for a genuine humanity and leaves the political decision of how to implement those values to the government.
