There is a nostalgic desire to put ourselves in Mary’s place that we might be the ones who anoint the feet of Jesus. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to care for the Lord! But when Jesus reminds us “the poor you have with you always” he is telling us that we DO have that opportunity. As he tells us in the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats “whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters, that you do unto me.” The saints have that instinct. They recognize the face of Jesus in those in need. The rest of us all to frequently can only see the sad sack right in front of us instead of the divine hidden within.
