“Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way.” I want a burning heart. Mr. and Mrs. Cleopas had burning hearts on the road to Emmaus so why can’t I! It seems that they obtained a burning heart by giving up their expectations and instead trusting the plan of God. In speaking of Jesus they said, “We were hoping that he would be the one” — the one who would fulfill my dreams, my expectations, my desires. On the road they learned to trust instead in God’s plan and God’s desire for the world and even though that plan includes that the Christ should suffer these things. To get a burning heart we too must trust God even in suffering.
