The multiplication of the loaves and fishes must have been a major event in the life of Jesus. Each Gospel writer tells the story — Matthew and Mark twice! In St. John’s account Jesus asked his disciples what they should do to help feed the crowd. Andrew answered, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” Jesus basically thought that was good enough — and the 5,000 were fed with baskets of food left over. Whenever we feel overwhelmed at the magnitude of the problems that confront the world today harken back to this story. If we willing to give our little bit to make the world a better place God will multiply it.
