One of the things that happens to a couple as they move toward marriage is an increasing understanding of themselves as a “we.” In the intimacy of marriage, instead of “him and her” they think of themselves in terms of “us.” This movement becomes obvious when a new father announces, “We’re pregnant.” (Although I always think to myself that the wife is doing the heavy lifting.) Something similar should happen in our spiritual life. Jesus thinks of our relationship with him in terms of “we.” “Whoever receives you receives me.” And he invites us to understand that we can a similar personal, intimate relationship with God. “Whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.” Our prayer should move us to overcome the gap between ourselves and God so that we can say, “You and me, Lord, we’re in this together.”
