Jesus poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel around his waist. Jesus was on the most important mission in the history of the world — eternal salvation. He was at the crucial moment of his life. He was facing the supreme sacrifice. Yet he takes the time for this simple gesture of caring for others. Often in our lives we wish we could make things better — on the large scale of the world or in the small scale of our families. What we can do seems so insignificant in light of the enormity of the problems. But, Jesus says “I have given you an example.” Do something, even if it seems like a small thing to you. Drive someone to the store, mow your neighbor’s lawn, call someone who is down, visit an elderly relative, give some time to a food bank. None of these things seem like much but the example of Jesus tells us that it is doing those small things with love that will, in fact, change the world for the better.
