“Lord, we do not know where you are going.” That anguished cry from the apostles to Jesus is similar to one we probably all have cried at one time or another. We imagine that there is some goal, some end, something we need to attain in order to be happy. Jesus’ answer to the apostles is the same he would give to us: “I am the way.” It is not so much reaching the end that matters, but it is how we live along the way. If each day we operate with love and care and compassion and generosity and forgiveness we are on the right path, we are on the way. This daily fidelity will, in the end, bring us to one of the many mansions Jesus has prepared.
