You’ve got to love the apostles — they are so much like us. They had the master catechist putting them through the most rigorous RCIA program for three years and still they didn’t get it. After Philip asks his question you can almost see Jesus slapping his forehead with a DUH: “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip?” I find it consoling that when I don’t get it — don’t get how close God is to me, how nothing can keep me from God’s love, how the will of God is the way to happiness — I am in good company. AND, that Jesus who continued to work with them, will stay by my side through it all as well.
