“We must obey God rather than men.” These words of St. Peter and the apostles are ones we all can agree with; however, for me at least, what it means to obey God is not always obvious. For example, I know that it is God’s will that we take care of our “common home,” as Pope Francis calls Planet Earth. What isn’t clear to me is how I am supposed to do that — recycle? lower my carbon footprint? plant a tree? I know that it is God’s will that I work to eliminate racism. How am I called to do that: Political activism? social commentary? Confrontation? To obey God means getting down to cases — the will of God is not abstract but concrete.
