When Saul got knocked off his proverbial horse (there was no horse in the story!) he wanted to know why. He said, “Who are you, sir?” The reply came, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Saul, the persecutor, would become Paul, the Apostle, by recognizing the intimate presence of Jesus in those who are suffering. The parable of the Sheep and the Goats makes a similar point when Jesus identifies himself with the hungry, the thirsty, the sick and imprisoned. Our conversion comes when we can see the face of Christ in those who are hurting. The challenge arises in trying to see Jesus in those who are behaving in ugly ways. Jesus might be hidden under the ugliness but he is there!
