I once had a poster which had emblazoned on it the words of Jesus: The Truth will set you Free. Underneath, in smaller print, it said: but first it will make you miserable. Living in the truth is not easy — it is hard to separate out what I want to be true from what God has made true. Saint Ignatius of Loyola suggested that we get to freedom by examining our preferences. For true freedom, the saint said, you should not prefer a long life to a short one, health to sickness, riches to poverty, honor to dishonor. The reason truth can make us miserable is that giving up those preferences is hard to do. True freedom is wanting always and only what God wants.
