In the Resurrection stories Jesus does not hang around. He dramatically appears to someone but does not let them “hold onto” him. Instead, he sends them back to the community. After greeting Mary Magdalene he tells her “go to my brothers.” The gospels suggest that the only way we come to understand what resurrection means is as a community. We can’t come to Easter faith in splendid isolation. The story of Mary Magdalene illustrates why this is so. She is looking for “where they have laid him.” She didn’t imagine news too good to be true. On her own, she didn’t have a big enough dream. Community is where we find that God’s dream for a just and peaceful world is bigger than we can imagine!
