Yesterday on a family zoom call my brother was bemoaning the state of the country. “I thought with the vaccine things would get better. I thought with a new president people would be kinder. When are we going to get back to normal?” The Bible certainly understands societal disaster but it also suggests we need to have bigger dreams. The crippled beggar at the Beautiful Gate wanted alms — the power of Jesus gave him a healed body. Mr. and Mrs. Cleopas wanted a restored Israel — the risen Jesus gave a world redeemed. We should not merely hope that things are “okay” but need to trust in God’s dream for a more just and peaceful world — and be willing to act to make it happen.
