In the Gospel of John Jesus gives us several dramatic images to help us understand who he is and the role he plays in our life: “I am the bread of life, the good shepherd, the true vine.” In John 8 we read: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” In a world full of darkness and confusion, we can turn to the Jesus who will light our way and illuminate what really matters. My family got its first television in 1954. In those days in Baltimore, TV wasn’t 24/7 but would sign off every night (playing the Star Spangled Banner) and then a test pattern would broadcast until programming started the following morning. The first thing every morning was a short devotional prayer entitled, “A lamp for me feet.” Then as now it is important to understand that in a world of doubt, we can find the right path by looking to Jesus.
