Certain text in the Bible are terrifying. For example, in the sermon St. Peter gives to the people of Jerusalem he says, “Now I know, brothers and sisters, that you acted out of ignorance.” It doesn’t take malice, it doesn’t take evil — acting in ignorance you can kill the son of God. We tend to rely on our good intentions but they are not enough if we act in ignorance. For example, if we remain ignorant of the pernicious effects of racism in our society we can perpetuate a system which destroys the presence of God. If we remain ignorant of the harm being done to our planet due to climate change we will harm God’s creation. If we stay ignorant we can commit atrocities.
