The campus ministry staff at LSU, after working for several years together, was called in by the bishop and all of us were dismissed. He was going ‘in a different direction.’ At the time I was crushed. I loved working with the college students. But I soon realized that new opportunities were, in fact, a much better way for me to serve. How often that is true in life. Things which seem negative are the occasion for God doing something new and wonderful (The flip side is also true. Some blessings are mixed at best. Oscar Wilde once wrote, “when the gods want to punish us they answer our prayer.”) Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM.” Being ‘lifted up” seems like a good thing, but for Jesus that meant being lifted up on the cross… which seems like something to avoid but it was the occasion for the salvation of the world. No matter what we are going through for good or ill God is at work and when we trust in God no matter what, all will be well.
