You can imagine that the events of Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection were an emotional roller coaster for the apostles. After things had calmed down they wanted to return to “normal.” Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” Good idea, they responded. However, as the Gospel reports they couldn’t do it. They couldn’t fish without Jesus. That illustrates that following Jesus means we can’t go back to our accustomed way of acting. We are different. We act different as followers of Jesus. I was thinking of concrete actions I might take as a disciple. One thing: whenever I hear a friend or relative make a racist comment or joke I will point out that all God’s children deserve to be treated with respect.
