Back in the day, I had a poster with the saying of Jesus: “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” At the bottom of the poster was a addendum: “but first, it will make you miserable.” The truth is that we are children of God, made in God’s image and likeness and precious in God’s sight. We are miserable because tolerate our faults and failings and compulsions instead of truly living as God intends us to live. The truth is that there isn’t anyone out there who isn’t brother and sister and mother to me. We are miserable because our greed and selfishness and resentment keeps pushing people away from us instead of living together as the family of God. The truth is that God has given us this beautiful world as a place to thrive. We are miserable because instead of tending this world as a divine garden we exploit it, pollute it, abuse it with the result we are damaging the only home we have in the universe.
